Her father was an ardent Jacobite. Annals record that her profession was delayed for some time because of family circumstances and the convent was unable to take her until she had a dowry: Annals 60

She was born or (more likely) baptised on 25 March 1684 according to the Newchurch Register of Culcheth, Lancs, p. 20 (ex info Peter Tyldesley).
