Who were the Nuns?

A Prosopographical study of the English Convents in exile 1600-1800

Bridgettine Brothers

The brothers were full members of the convent, but since they are not nuns they are listed separately. The community moved to Rouen in 1580 because of dangerous conditions in Flanders. However Rouen was troubled by the negative impact of the wars of religion and the community decided to move to Lisbon, at that time under Spanish rule. They arrived at the end of May 1594 remaining there until driven out in 1809 to escape the effects of the Peninsula campaign.

Sources

The main sources for this list are the MS Chantress' Book, now deposited at Exeter University Library which contains lists of members but is to be used with caution. One conventual archivists comments on the fly leaf that there are many inaccuracies and inconsistencies over dates. Canon J R Fletcher's research in the 1920s and 1930s for his History resulted in a substantial collection of notebooks (35) also held at the Special Collections Library at Exeter University. The recent interpretive chapter by Peter Cunich provides a substantive overview of the work and the importance of the brothers. See; 'The Brothers of Syon, 1420-1695', in eds. Jones, E A and Alexandra Walsham, Syon Abbey and its Books: Reading, Writing and Religion c.1400-1700, Woodbridge, The Boydell Press, 2010.
